OUR STORY
On a sun-filled Sunday morning in Newcastle, Charlotte and I met with family and friends at the Le Marché market. With a coffee and croissant in hand, we slowly made our way through each individual stall, excited to see what unique pieces they had to offer. We were instantly drawn to a small stall filled with gorgeous children’s clothing. As we entered, we were greeted by a wonderful French woman named Jeanette, who explained to us that all of the clothes were, in fact, preloved and were sourced in France. I couldn’t believe my eyes! I hadn’t intended on shopping for clothing that morning, but the stall embodied everything I was passionate about: sustainable, unique, and long-lasting pieces that could be worn, loved, and passed along to others for years to come (plus, they were French—a huge bonus for a Francophile like me). I pulled out my savings card to purchase the most beautiful collared gingham dress. It was unlike anything I had seen before; it possessed an unexplainable and exquisite heirloom quality. I was in love! I walked away excited by the thought of seeing my wonderful daughter wear it for the next few seasons—learning to walk and run, playing at the park in the dress.
Little did I know, Charlotte’s Gigi, who was shopping with us at the time, had sneakily also purchased the sweetest (almost matching) scalloped cardigan that I had been swooning over at the stall. She gave it to Charlotte that evening back at their house, and her Autumn outfit was complete. I knew there was something extra special about the whole experience—the stall, the clothing, and the messaging behind each piece. I started following the business on Instagram. Nine months later, Jeanette, the owner, announced that she was relocating to France with her family and that the business was for sale. I felt an instant pull. I couldn’t bear the thought of the business not continuing—where would I buy those beautifully crafted clothes for Charlotte as she grew? So, nine months later, my second baby, Merci Preloved Kids, was born.
